T

he U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is currently seeking applicants for grant funds under its Fair Housing Initiatives Program.  The purpose of the FHIP is to increase compliance with the Fair Housing Act and with substantially equivalent State and local fair housing laws. Approximately $20,250,000 has been appropriated for FY 2002.  These funds, which are being made available on a competitive basis to eligible organizations, are allocated as follows:

Description

Private Enforcement Initiative (PEI)

This initiative assists private, tax-exempt fair housing enforcement organizations in the investigation and enforcement of alleged violations of the Act and substantially equivalent State and local fair housing laws.

Education and Outreach Initiative (EOI)

$6,325,000

§         Regional/Local/ Community-Based Programs - $100,000

§         National Programs -$1,000,000

12 – 24 months

 

This initiative assists projects that inform the public about the rights and obligations under the Act and substantially equivalent State and local fair housing laws.  EOI has four Components: Regional/Local/Community-Based Programs:

(1) General Component

(2) Disability Component

National Program:

(3) Media Campaign Component.

(4) Fair Housing Awareness Component.

Fair Housing Organizations Initiative (FHOI)

$2,100,000

$1,050,000 allocated over a three-year period at up to $350,000 per year

3 years

This initiative provides assistance to projects that establish or build the capacity of organizations to become viable fair housing organizations that conduct enforcement activities in underserved areas with large concentrations of persons protected by the Act.
